Blog 1 – Chapters Presentation Reflection/Madelay Cabrera Ravelo

Public speaking is something that used to make me feel very nervous and unsure of myself. Before taking this class, I always thought that speaking in front of others was mainly about memorizing information and trying not to make mistakes. However, after watching the different group presentations and learning about the chapters covered throughout this project, my perspective on public speaking has changed significantly. This experience helped me realize that public speaking is not just about talking, but about preparation, confidence, ethics, and creating a real connection with the audience.
Another important concept I learned was how to manage speech anxiety. Before this class, I believed that being nervous meant that I was not capable of being a good speaker. Through the chapters and presentations, I learned that nervousness is normal and something almost every speaker experiences. Learning strategies such as practicing, staying present, and focusing on preparation helped me realize that anxiety can be managed instead of avoided. This made me feel more confident about my own ability to speak in front of others.
Ethics in public speaking was another topic that made a strong impression on me. I learned that speakers have a responsibility to provide accurate and truthful information. Using credible sources and avoiding plagiarism is essential in building trust with an audience. I also learned that ethical speakers should respect different opinions and communicate responsibly. This chapter helped me realize how powerful words can be and how easily misinformation can affect people if speakers are careless.
Audience analysis also helped me see public speaking from a new perspective. I learned that audiences are not passive listeners, but active participants in the communication process. Paying attention to facial expressions, body language, and reactions allows speakers to adjust their message when necessary. This made me understand that public speaking is more interactive than I originally thought and that connection plays a big role in successful communication.
The chapters on visual aids and presentation media were very helpful. I learned that tools such as slides, images, videos, and charts can improve understanding and help maintain audience attention when used correctly. Visual aids should support the speaker’s message, not replace it. I also learned that relying too heavily on slides can weaken a presentation. This taught me that preparation and balance are key when using media in public speaking.
Delivery techniques were another important lesson. I learned that nonverbal communication, such as posture, eye contact, facial expressions, and movement, can strongly affect how a message is received. Voice control, including tone, volume, and pacing, also plays a major role in keeping an audience engaged. Avoiding filler words and speaking clearly helps a speaker appear more confident and professional.
I also learned about the difference between informative and persuasive speaking. Informative speeches focus on educating the audience, while persuasive speeches aim to influence opinions or actions. Learning about organization methods, such as chronological order and cause-and-effect, helped me understand how speeches are structured. I also learned about persuasive techniques such as ethos, pathos, and logos, and how they help strengthen arguments when used correctly.
Another valuable part of this project was learning about group speaking and collaboration. Working in groups requires communication, planning, and cooperation. Each group member plays an important role in the success of a presentation. Watching how teamwork affected the quality of presentations helped me appreciate the importance of preparation and shared responsibility.
One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was observing different speaking styles. Each presenter had a unique way of delivering their message. Some speakers were more energetic, while others were calmer and more structured. This showed me that there is no single correct way to be a good speaker. What matters most is authenticity, preparation, and connection with the audience.
This project also helped me reflect on how public speaking skills can be applied outside the classroom. Communication skills are important in academic settings, professional environments, and everyday life. Being able to express ideas clearly, listen actively, and speak with confidence are skills that will benefit me long-term.
Overall, this group presentation project was a valuable learning experience. It helped me gain confidence, reduce anxiety, and better understand the many elements of effective public speaking. I now feel more prepared to speak in front of others and apply these skills in my academic and future professional life. Public speaking is a skill that improves with practice, and this project helped me take an important step toward becoming a more confident communicator.
